last week i found a wild bunny trapped inside our fire barrel.
she was just a little baby, covered in ash and trembling. i showed
her to evan and he agreed to keep her. she was so unbelievably cute!
we played around with many names for her, but eventually evan's
name just stuck. Margaret Thatcher.
we didn't have a hutch so i made a little home for her in a big plastic
container. i went out everyday and picked her fresh dandelion flowers
& leaves and some grass. i introduced her to apples and tomatoes and
she loved them! every night we'd watch a movie and i'd take her out
and feed her apples so she could be with us too. she seemed so happy
and so curious and never leaving my side for too long. she was always
so calm when i held her like a baby too.
yesterday morning, i went into her room (i'd put her in the guest bedroom)
and she seemed as lively as ever, jumping around. but when i checked on
her in the afternoon, she was laying down on her side. "i've never seen you
do that before." when i bent down to pet her, she was stiff. i paused and stared
at her, waiting for her to blink, waiting for her little ribs to rise and fall
but she was gone.
i was in a shock all day. i didn't know what to do. we'd only had her a
week but she was my first bunny and so adorable. evan had even taken
a real liking to her (he is not a big fan of pets). i went out and picked some wild
flowers, some dandelions, and some sage. then i waited for him to come home.
when i told him the news, it was like realising it and i cried for a while. then we
buried her with all the gifts i'd picked, under the little tree in the front yard.
so now i'm thinking of her in bunny heaven, running through fields with only the
wildest flowers, stretching her legs as far as they can go. filling up on the most lush
grass a bunny can find and painting with all the colours of the wind.
i miss you little margaret thatcher.

I know it's not the same and it won't replace Margaret Thatcher, but you could adopt a bunny from the RSPCA in Canberra. There is a lovely black one called Dandelion there at the moment who is pretty darn cute. http://www.adoptapet.com.au/search/searchResults.asp?task=search&searchid=&advanced=&s=&statusID=3®ionID=2&animalType=86&submitbtn=Find+Animals

ReplyDeletewhen i was a kid on okinawa i had two little rabbits. i found them dead after school one day. i still remember that day and how i felt after i burried them with my dad. i hope you feel better soon.
