the day after our trip to gibraltar falls, evan decided to take me up to cathedral rocks. its a 'moderate' little hike...well...its what you make of it really. cathedral rocks is in orroral valley and starts out at the old orroral valley tracking station. (the station was used by NASA to support satellites in the early 60s to the mid 80s. but thats not really relevant....) there is a little creek that you have to cross and usually there is a plank of wood to help you but we're guessing it hadn't been crossed in a while cos there was no plank in sight! luckily there were some trees nearby so we scavenged some branches and lugged a massive log over and made our own way. felt very man vs. wild for me.
there is a bit of grass/marsh land to walk across after the creek. its beautiful. there were lots of kangaroos hopping about and we came across a few roo carcasses. it was a bit sad but mostly fascinating. especially the ones that were, for the most part, intact. i see dead roos all the time as i drive around canberra but rarely do i get to examine their bones up close. once we reached the treeline, it started to drizzle down. i'm not sure if there is a specific trail that leads up to cathedral rocks, but we definitely didn't use one. we bush bashed our way to the top and the hour of expected drizzle turned into an afternoon of downpour. we explored the rocks, took in the absolutely stunning views, ate our lunch in a little cave, and then trudged our way back down.
so happy to be spending so much time exploring with evan. i love that guy.
